Challenge

The solution needed to provide reliable touchscreen and ThinClient performance in high-heat loading docks, with waterproofing, easy access to interconnects, compatibility with existing mounts, and simple maintenance.

Results

After successful environmental testing, HP deployed Modular’s enclosures in FedEx depots in 2013, and after a decade of reliable, cost-effective performance, partnered again in 2023 to upgrade the kiosks while reusing existing mounts.

HP Inc.

HP (Hewlett-Packard) is a global leader in computing and printing technologies, known for delivering reliable, scalable solutions across enterprise and consumer markets. With a long-standing reputation for innovation, HP supports major logistics and manufacturing operations with specialized hardware deployments. The company continues to evolve its technology to meet the demands of modern industrial environments and high-volume workflows.

The Challenge

The solution needed to deliver reliable touchscreen and ThinClient functionality in a loading dock environment, where ambient temperatures can reach up to 110°F. A waterproof touchscreen was essential, along with easy and dependable access to all necessary interconnects—such as data, power, and barcode scanner connections. It was also important to support existing industrial PC mounting systems already installed at the facility. Finally, ease of maintenance for both the touchscreen and ThinClient was a key requirement.

The Solution

The solution featured a powder-coated aluminum kiosk enclosure that housed a fully sealed 12.5” touchscreen display, with internal space for a ThinClient and a NEMA 4/12-rated environmental seal. To minimize internal heat buildup, the power supplies for both the display and ThinClient were mounted externally. The touchscreen was ruggedized and sealed, with all interconnects routed through sealed cable glands to maintain ingress protection. The enclosure’s mounting pattern was engineered to align with existing installation brackets, and both the touchscreen and ThinClient mounts were designed for easy removal and replacement to support efficient field maintenance and repair.

The Results

HP rigorously tested Modular’s enclosure design in their environmental facilities and confirmed it met all performance requirements. In 2013, they began deploying the new ThinClient kiosks—protected by Modular enclosures—across FedEx’s North American depots. These units operated reliably for a decade at roughly one-third the cost of the previously installed PC systems. By 2023, impressed with both the durability and cost savings of the original rollout, HP again partnered with Modular to upgrade all FedEx Freight kiosks. The updated enclosures were designed to accommodate the latest ThinClient models while maintaining compatibility with the existing mounting systems.
