Lonza Inc.

Lonza Inc., a multinational pharmaceutical manufacturing company, required 21” touchscreen display workstations in some of their North American facilities. In addition to standard pharmaceutical product requirements, such as polished 316 stainless steel surfaces for ease of cleaning and sanitation and gasketing that is impervious to harsh cleaning solvents, Lonza wanted mobile workstations that would transition smoothly between stations and other product manufacturing areas.

The Challenge

The solution required a reliable mobile workstation designed for a NEMA 4X environment and compliant with pharmaceutical industry standards. Key requirements included a minimum of four hours of battery-powered operation, dual display support, waterproof and chemical-resistant external speakers, and dependable wireless LAN connectivity. The unit also needed integrated NEMA 4X-rated keyboards and pointing devices, with a design that allowed for straightforward maintenance and future tech upgrades.

The Solution

The solution featured a polished 316 stainless steel cabinet equipped with four FDA-approved locking casters, knife-edge door seals with closed-cell silicone gaskets, internal hinges, a sloped top to prevent water pooling, and sealed cable glands for USB routing. It included internal power distribution, a 120-volt 600-watt UPS with battery backup, and dual projective capacitive touchscreens protected behind sealed Lexan windows. A waterproof, chemical-resistant USB-powered speaker and a sealed external wireless LAN kit supported functionality in harsh environments. Internal cooling fans managed heat buildup from multiple components, while the enclosure's ergonomic design ensured OSHA-compliant keyboard and pointer access, and featured a NEMA 4X-rated external power switch with quick-disconnect connections for easy relocation. Dual front and rear access doors with keyed latches allowed for straightforward equipment maintenance and replacement.

The Results

Modular provided a cost-effective solution that exceeded Lonza’s specification requirements, establishing a supplier/partner relationship that resulted in Modular providing not only this solution to various facilities but also developing and providing fixed workstation solutions incorporating 21” and 24” touchscreen workstation products for both NEMA 4X environments and hazardous area Class I, Division 1 and Division 2 production environments as well.
